Portugal sports: Investment calls, FPF surplus, and doping trial retrial

In Portugal, several developments are shaping the sports landscape. Olympic canoeist Fernando Pimenta has called for increased public investment and tax reductions on sporting equipment, noting that many athletes operate in the shadow of football and face poor training facility conditions.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has unanimously approved its 2025/26 accounts, reporting a positive balance of 3.1 million euros. The federation highlighted reaching 260,000 practitioners and noted successes such as the men's national team returning to fifth in the FIFA rankings.

In legal news, the doping case involving the former cycling team W52-FC Porto continues. The Porto Court of Appeal has ordered a retrial after ruling that previous testimony by former sporting director Nuno Ribeiro was illegal because it was provided via a written document. During the initial proceedings, both a judicial police inspector and businessman Adriano Quintanilha remained silent. Quintanilha and a police inspector face accusations related to a scheme to conceal doping activities.
