Porto court seeks medical clarity on Iker Casillas heart attack
The Porto Labor Court has requested further clarifications to determine if the heart attack suffered by former FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas on May 1, 2019, qualifies as a work-related accident. The court deemed previous technical-scientific conclusions insufficient regarding whether intense physical effort caused the rupture of a pre-existing coronary atherosclerotic plaque.
Court documents detail Casillas's routine at the Olival Training Center, noting he performed gym exercises and light tactical training before experiencing shortness of breath. The legal proceedings involve FC Porto and the insurer Fidelidade. Final arguments have been rescheduled for November 6.
Casillas's defense has contested the necessity of further intervention by the Legal Medical Council (CML). The defense argues that the original rapporteur, Natália António, should provide the clarifications to ensure scientific continuity. Furthermore, the defense has questioned the impartiality of the CML president, Francisco Corte-Real, alleging a conflict of interest regarding his academic positions on legal causality.
