Porto do Itaqui expansion to increase capacity by 8 million tons
The construction of Berço 98 at Porto do Itaqui is expected to increase the terminal's annual cargo handling capacity by more than 8 million tons. The project involves an investment exceeding R$ 400 million using the company's own resources, with completion scheduled for December 2026.
The new docking point will measure 380 meters in length and 40 meters in width, with depths reaching up to 18 meters to accommodate large vessels. The Empresa Maranhense de Administração Portuária (Emap) estimates that the new structure could increase the port's annual revenue by approximately 20%.
Minister of Ports and Airports Tomé Franca noted that the expansion will facilitate the outflow of production from the Matopiba region, which encompasses parts of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia. The project includes infrastructure such as ship loader rails, fire fighting systems, drainage, and utility networks for water, energy, and fuel.
