Porto Half Marathon: heat causes multiple collapses and ICU admissions

The Porto Half Marathon was marked by several cases of exhaustion, dehydration, and fainting due to temperatures approaching 30 degrees Celsius. While the race began at 9:00 AM, rising heat affected many participants attempting to complete the 21-kilometer course.

Two runners were admitted to intensive care at São João Hospital in Porto following serious incidents. During the emergency response, a female runner was also slightly injured after being struck by a Red Cross motorcycle.

In response to the medical emergencies, organizers have acknowledged the need to increase water distribution in future editions. Plans for 2027 include an earlier start time of 8:00 AM and a potential reduction in the number of registrations to prevent overcrowding in narrow streets.
