Porto housing rights protesters decide to camp overnight

Protesters advocating for housing rights have decided to spend another night in Porto's Praça de D. João I following the removal of their tents by authorities. The decision was reached during an assembly of approximately 200 people on Monday evening.

The encampment, which had been established since Saturday, consisted of about 60 tents. The protest was organized by the platform ‘Não dá mais para viver assim’ to voice opposition to the rising cost of living, housing prices, and fuel costs.

Earlier that morning, Municipal Police and other authorities removed the tents, citing the illegal occupation of public space without authorization. The Porto City Council stated that the action was a joint effort between the PSP, Municipal Police, and Porto Ambiente to prevent the unauthorized use and degradation of public areas. This follows a larger demonstration on Saturday where roughly 1,500 people gathered in the city to protest similar economic pressures.
