Porto Metro launches Dragão‑Souto line plan, public consultation open
The Metro do Porto is preparing a new 6.9‑km line linking the Estádio do Dragão in Porto to the Souto district of Gondomar. The project includes nine stations – São Roque, Cerco, Parque Oriental, Lagoa, Valbom, Hospital Fernando Pessoa, Cosme Ferreira Castro, Oliveira Martins and Souto – and a mix of tunnels, viaducts and surface sections. Travel time between the stadium and Souto is projected at 20 minutes and 28 seconds, with an estimated 10.3 million passengers in the first year of operation.
The detailed study entered public consultation on 15 September, with documents available on the participa.pt portal. Two design alternatives are being considered for the Parque Oriental‑Lagoa segment: a fully underground tunnel or a surface alignment. The line will also feature three new tunnels and a 125‑metre viaduct over the Rio Torto. Officials expect a 9 % increase in overall Metro ridership and significant time savings for both private‑car users and other public‑transport modes.
