Porto metropolitan area addresses urban sanitation and property issues

Various municipal issues are being addressed within the Porto metropolitan area. Paulo Esteves Ferreira, President of the Valongo City Council, has proposed the creation of a metropolitan fund to support the correction of illegal sanitation and rainwater connections in private homes and businesses. He identified these improper connections as a primary cause of pollution in rivers such as the Leça.

In Porto, Mayor Pedro Duarte indicated that the city may repurpose two properties originally intended for mosques for public interest, following unsuccessful public auctions. The properties, located in Rua da Porta do Sol and Campanhã, failed to attract bidders at their current price points.

Additionally, the Socialist Party (PS) in Porto has proposed a project to increase the number of public restrooms in the city. The proposal suggests opening design competitions for architecture students from local universities to design these facilities, addressing a perceived shortage of public sanitation in several key urban areas.
