Porto police intervention in housing protest leaves dozens injured

A police operation to dismantle a housing protest camp in Porto's Praça D. João I has sparked significant controversy and calls for political accountability. The intervention, which occurred in the early hours of October 15, resulted in dozens of injuries, with reports citing between 37 and 39 individuals wounded, including two in serious condition.

Protesters and human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have condemned the use of force as disproportionate and unjustified against a peaceful movement. Conversely, the Public Security Police (PSP) justified the action, stating that demonstrators resisted the removal of tents and refused to comply with noise regulations. Porto Mayor Pedro Duarte defended the authorities, stating the police were forced to act after he had promised to be ‘absolutely implacable’ regarding the occupation of the square.

The incident has triggered an administrative investigation by the Inspectorate-General of Internal Administration (IGAI) to evaluate police conduct. Meanwhile, a public petition calling for Mayor Duarte's resignation has gathered over 1,300 signatures. The housing movement continues to demand rent caps, an end to evictions, and increased public housing, with further demonstrations planned across Portugal.
