Porto Santo, Syros, Lofoten Islands Gain Tourist Interest

Expedia's 2026 travel research shows a surge in searches for quieter European island destinations. Interest in Portugal's Porto Santo rose by 85%, attracting visitors with its 9‑km golden Praia do Porto Santo beach, sand dunes, and local seafood specialties. Greece's Syros saw a 60% increase, offering a more relaxed pace than nearby Santorini, historic towns such as Ermoupoli, and traditional tavern fare. Norway's Lofoten Islands experienced a 50% rise in interest, drawing travelers to steep mountain peaks, fjords, fishing villages and the chance to see the midnight sun and aurora borealis.

These islands have entered Expedia's top five European summer spots, reflecting a broader shift toward less crowded, character‑rich locations as travelers seek a slower rhythm and authentic local cuisine.
