Porto tram line 22 resumes service after five‑year suspension

The historic electric tram line 22 in Porto has returned to operation on Saturday, with the first run scheduled for 09:15 from the Carmo stop. The line, which runs a 30‑minute circular route between Carmo and the Batalha area, was suspended in November 2021 due to construction of the Metro’s Linha Rosa expansion. The Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do Porto (STCP) confirmed that safety tests, driver training and infrastructure inspections have been completed and that all conditions for safe service are met.

The restored service runs daily with trams every 30 minutes, linking Carmo to key city‑centre sights such as Praça da Liberdade, the Torre dos Clérigos and the Funicular dos Guindais. STCP noted that the line’s re‑opening also restores connections with other tram routes, notably line 18 at Carmo, which in turn provides access to line 1. The suspension had caused an estimated loss of about €1 million in 2024.
