Porto Velho marks 114 years of Madeira-Mamoré Railway with festival
Porto Velho will host a free three‑day Festival Madeira‑Mamoré from July 31 to August 2 to celebrate the 114th anniversary of the historic Madeira‑Mamoré Railway. Organized by the municipal tourism secretariat, the city’s cultural foundation and the railway complex, the program features concerts by local bands, forró performances, a special women’s‑empowerment segment linked to the 20th anniversary of the Maria da Penha Law, and a book launch.
Mayor Léo Moraes said the railway “is part of our identity and represents the strength of a people that helped build this city,” adding that the event aims to boost tourism, preserve heritage and provide a space for community interaction. The festival is also intended to increase public use of the historic complex, supporting the local economy and cultural life of Porto Velho.
