Portobelo security plan announced for Cristo Negro festivities
Authorities in Portobelo, Panama, have announced a security and logistics plan for the upcoming Cristo Negro de Portobelo festivities on October 21. More than 1,500 police officers will be deployed to ensure the safety of the estimated 80,000 to 120,000 pilgrims expected to attend the religious event.
Due to ongoing restoration work, the San Felipe Apóstol Church is currently uninhabitable. As a result, liturgical celebrations will be held outdoors. Masses will take place at the gazebo adjacent to the church until October 17, moving to the central plaza from October 18 onwards. The image of the Black Christ will be positioned at the church entrance to allow devotees access for veneration.
The Ministry of Culture noted that restoration projects are underway at the San Felipe Apóstol Church and the San Juan de Dios chapel. These efforts aim to preserve the historical heritage of Portobelo and provide local employment. Officials indicated that the museum associated with the site may be completed between late November and early December.
