Portonave expands electric equipment fleet with $61 million investment
Portonave, Brazil's first private container terminal, is deepening its decarbonisation drive by acquiring new electric handling equipment. The company bought 30 electric Terminal Tractors from Terberg (manufactured in Malaysia) and five electric Reach Stackers from Kalmar (made in China) at a cost of roughly R$ 61 million, part of a larger R$ 2 billion investment plan. The new tractors and stackers are expected to cut greenhouse‑gas emissions by about 30 % and 80 % respectively compared with diesel‑powered units.
In a separate shipment, Portonave received the final seven of its 14 electric Rubber‑Tyred Gantry (e‑RTG) cranes, completing the fleet. The 28‑metre‑tall, 156‑tonne cranes, designed by Konecranes in Finland and assembled in China, are fully electric and feature collision‑avoidance sensors and automated controls. Together with previously delivered e‑RTGs, the upgraded yard will support a capacity rise from 1.5 million to 2 million TEU per year. The total spend on electric equipment, including forthcoming Ship‑to‑Shore (STS) cranes from ZPMC, exceeds R$ 500 million.
