Portopalo di Capo Passero: 80 migrants land on Sicilian coast
Approximately 80 migrants landed on the beach at Portopalo di Capo Passero, in the province of Syracuse, on the morning of August 20, 2026. The group, described as adult males in good health, reportedly originated from Bangladesh.
The vessel arrived at the Pantanello area near the Capopassero camping site. The arrival was first noticed by swimmers around 7:30 AM. Local police from Pachino and volunteers from the Portopalo Civil Protection coordinated the rescue operations, providing the exhausted passengers with food, water, and dry clothing.
Medical checks indicated that while the individuals were exhausted and suffering from mild hypothermia due to overnight navigation, there were no critical health emergencies. Following identification procedures, the migrants are scheduled to be transported to Augusta by bus.
