Portopalo, Sicily: 21 migrants rescued after being found on provincial road

Twenty‑one migrants were discovered early on 20 June along the provincial road 8 (Maucini) near Portopalo di Capo Passero, Sicily. The group, all men in good health, reported they had left Libya the previous Thursday and crossed the Mediterranean before reaching the Sicilian coast. Their nationalities were identified as four Egyptians, thirteen Eritreans, two Somalis and two Sudanese.

Italian authorities – the State Police, Carabinieri and the Port Captaincy – responded to a civilian alert and, together with civil‑protection volunteers, provided immediate assistance, food and hydration. While the vessel that brought them ashore has not yet been located, the migrants are being held at a reception centre and await transport on buses to other facilities.
