Portopalo: Three convicted in illegal parking case

The Court of Syracuse has issued three convictions regarding the illegal use of agricultural land for a paid parking area at the Lido Scialai beach club in Portopalo di Capo Passero.

Judge Carmelo Livolsi sentenced the legal representative of the beach club, the parking area manager, and the company's design engineer to six months of arrest and an 18,000 euro fine, with suspended sentences. The court found that the defendants converted agricultural land into a commercial parking lot without the necessary building permits or landscape authorizations.

The area is subject to strict environmental protections, falling within the Natura 2000 network under the “Pantani della Sicilia Sud Orientale” site. The court ordered the restoration of the land to its original state at the defendants' expense and mandated compensation for damages to the Municipality of Portopalo di Capo Passero, the amount of which will be determined in a separate civil proceeding.
