Ports of Genoa and Savannah strengthen transatlantic trade ties
A trade mission led by the Liguria Region has convened at the Port of Savannah to strengthen cooperation between the Ports of Genoa and the Georgia Ports Authority. The delegation, including representatives from Federlogistica and the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, met with Georgia Ports Authority officials to discuss port governance, intermodalism, and transatlantic trade development.
Discussions focused on creating a digital corridor between Savannah and Genoa, positioning Genoa as a gateway to European and Asian markets while Savannah serves as an entry point for the southern United States. The mission also explored ways to facilitate commercial exchanges through technological innovation, startups, and increased digitalization.
Currently, the Ligurian ports of Genoa and Vado manage approximately 38% of container traffic between Italy and the United States. Both regions are investing in rail connectivity to expand their reach; Savannah is developing the Mason Mega Rail Terminal to handle long double-stack trains, while Genoa is enhancing its intermodal connections to strengthen its role as a Mediterranean gateway.
