Portugal battles widespread wildfires and fatal accidents
Portugal is facing a severe wave of wildfires, particularly in the northern regions. As of August 18, 2026, nearly 2,000 emergency personnel are battling multiple active fires across several districts, including Porto, Viana do Castelo, Bragança, and Vila Real.
Major active fronts include Torre de Moncorvo, which has required significant resources since Saturday, and fires in Santo Tirso, Arouca, and Ponte de Lima. While some blazes, such as those in Valongo and Lamego, have been brought under control, others remain highly active due to hot and dry weather conditions. The Valongo fire resulted in seven injuries, including five firefighters.
In addition to the wildfires, fatal accidents have been reported. A truck driver died following a crash on the EN380 in Vendas Novas, and a collision on the IC5 in Vila Flor resulted in two deaths and four injuries.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has praised the extraordinary work of the Ministry of Internal Administration and the emergency services, noting that while the current deployment is the largest ever, the country remains at high risk. He also highlighted a significant increase in arrests for arson, with 210 people detained so far this year.
