Portugal sets record medal count at Mediterranean Games

Portugal has achieved record-breaking success at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, reaching a total of 26 medals, the highest in the nation's participation history.

In athletics, Omar Elkhatib secured gold in the 400 meters with a championship record of 44.92 seconds, becoming only the second Portuguese athlete to break the 45-second barrier. Auriol Dongmo also set a new games record in the shot put with a throw of 19.42 meters, leading a Portuguese 1-2 finish with Jéssica Inchude taking silver. The women's 4x100m relay team, consisting of Arialis Martínez, Beatriz Castelhano, Catarina Lourenço, and Rosalina Santos, also claimed gold with a time of 43.57 seconds.

In football, the Portuguese women's under-18 national team secured its first Mediterranean Games gold medal by defeating Italy 4-0 in the final. Other notable performances include Mariana Machado winning silver in the 10,000 meters.
