Portugal addresses waste management and recycling initiatives

In Palmela, Mayor Ana Teresa Vicente is calling for reinforced waste collection and coercive measures against illegal dumping. She identified four key areas for intervention: collection, disposal, treatment, and behavioral changes. The Mayor noted that the municipality receives more waste than its resident population would justify, suggesting that individuals often travel to the area specifically to dispose of refuse illegally. She is advocating for a coordinated response involving multiple municipalities through the Intermunicipal Community of the Setúbal Peninsula (CIM).

Meanwhile, in Madeira, the Volta Deposit and Refund System (SDR) for single-use beverage packaging is seeing increased activity. The system, designed to meet EU environmental goals, involves a ten-cent deposit on plastic PET bottles and metal cans, which is refunded upon return to automated machines. Recent reports indicate high demand for these machines in urban areas, occasionally leading to queues and consumer dissatisfaction in commercial establishments as people return large quantities of packaging.
