Portugal advances regional cultural and archaeological heritage initiatives

In Portugal, several initiatives are underway to preserve and recognize regional cultural and archaeological heritage.

The Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta is hosting a debate titled ‘Gestão Municipal do Património Arqueológico’ (Municipal Management of Archaeological Heritage) as part of the 2026 Proença-a-Nova Archaeological Field. The event brings together specialists and local officials, including the President of the Proença-a-Nova Municipality, to discuss the role of local authorities in the protection, study, and territorial development through archaeological resources.

Simultaneously, the Feira da Golegã has entered a 30-day public consultation period for its candidacy to be included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Diogo Rosa, Vice-President of the Golegã Municipality, described the process as a vital step toward recognizing the secular horse fair's unique identity and traditions. The candidacy is supported by historical documentation organized by the Associação Feira Nacional do Cavalo.
