Portugal advances unified social benefit scheme, the Prestação Social Única

Portugal's parliament published Law No. 36/2026 on 27 July, granting the government authority to create the Prestação Social Única (PSU), a single benefit that will replace 13 existing social supports. The law specifies that dismissal for just cause does not automatically bar access to the PSU and sets asset limits of 60 IAS (about €32,200) for both movable and immovable property.

The decree‑law regulating the PSU’s eligibility criteria and legal regime is expected to be approved within the next few days, with the government committing an additional €30 million per year to fund the programme. The final rules must be published by the end of August to meet the requirements of the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
