Portugal Agriculture Minister highlights new market and regional challenges

Portugal's Minister of Agriculture and Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, has highlighted key developments for the country's agricultural sector, focusing on infrastructure and regional sustainability.

In Águeda, a new municipal market is nearing completion following an investment exceeding eight million euros. The 6,778-square-meter facility will feature over 70 spaces for commerce, catering, and services, including specialized areas for fresh produce, meat, bakery, and fish. The project faced delays of approximately two years due to legal disputes with the initial designer, but local authorities confirm that financing is secured and the facility aims to strengthen local production and food security by shortening supply chains.

In the Algarve region, Minister Fernandes participated in a seminar regarding the future of local agriculture for the 2028-2034 period. Discussions centered on the necessity of strategic investment, generational renewal, and the critical role of water management. The seminar emphasized that efficient water use is a determining factor for the sector's sustainability and food security, requiring an integrated approach that balances agricultural needs with tourism, industry, and public supply.
