Portugal allocates funds for port decarbonization and rail modernization
Portugal is implementing significant infrastructure investments through the Sustentável 2030 and Norte 2030 programs. The Port of Leixões will receive 12.2 million euros to support decarbonization efforts. This includes an 'Onshore Power Supply' (OPS) plan at the Cruise Terminal, allowing ships to connect to the land-based electrical grid and turn off auxiliary engines, as well as increasing photovoltaic energy production across port buildings and parking areas.
Additionally, approximately 66 million euros has been allocated to modernize the Linha do Norte railway. This investment, directed at Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), aims to enhance safety and operational capacity by implementing the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2. Key upgrades include signaling and telecommunications improvements between Granja and Gaia, and between Campanhã and Entroncamento, to align the national network with European standards and prepare for future high-speed connections between Porto and Lisbon.
