Portugal allocates over €200 million to upgrade rail lines and metro station

Portugal has signed two major railway contracts that together exceed €200 million. The first contract covers the complete renewal of the Ovar‑Espinho section of the Linha do Norte. The second, worth about €25 million and co‑financed by the European Union, authorises the elimination of 11 level crossings between Nine and Barroselas on the Linha do Minho, creating new over‑ and under‑passes and improving safety and capacity.

Separately, Lisbon’s Santa Apolónia metro station will be closed in July for structural reinforcement after soil instability was discovered during works. The nine‑month shutdown will keep trains off the line until an expected reopening in April 2027.

These projects are part of a broader effort to modernise Portugal’s rail network while maintaining existing lines and enhancing urban transit infrastructure.
