Portugal almond production projected to rise 40% to record levels

Almond production in Portugal is projected to increase by 40% this year, reaching a record 115,000 tonnes with shells. This forecast was provided to Portugal Nuts – Associação Promoção Frutos Secos by Demeter, an international agricultural data firm.

Tiago Costa, president of Portugal Nuts, noted that the current campaign features significantly higher yields and good quality compared to the previous year. The harvest began in mid-August and is expected to conclude in mid-October. Costa also highlighted that rising prices are making the sector more favorable for producers.

Looking further ahead, studies estimate national almond production for 2026 at approximately 114,900 tonnes with shells, which equates to 34,470 tonnes of almond kernels. This would represent a 39% increase over the previous campaign. Costa acknowledged that the sector has experienced rapid growth, and industry players are currently working to consolidate technical and operational knowledge.
