Portugal and Brazil advance infant feeding rules and workplace breastfeeding support

In Portugal, the advertising of infant formula is restricted by specific legal rules that prohibit marketing to infants, health or nutritional claims, and the use of children’s images. The Directorate‑General of Health (DGS) has issued a guide for digital influencers and advertisers outlining these prohibitions.

In Brazil, companies are encouraged to create workplace environments that support breastfeeding. Measures include dedicated lactation rooms, flexible scheduling for milk expression, and training for managers on maternity rights. Brazilian labor law (CLT) guarantees breastfeeding breaks until the child is six months old, and the Programa Empresa Cidadã allows maternity leave extensions up to 180 days. Such policies aim to benefit mothers, infants, and employers alike.
