Portugal's GNR warns drivers to check tires before summer travel
The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) reported that more than 8,500 tyre‑related traffic violations were recorded in 2025, with 4,187 additional offences detected by 15 June 2026. Those infractions were linked to 889 vehicle accidents in 2025 and 576 by mid‑2026, highlighting the safety risk of deteriorated tyres.
The GNR emphasised that tyres are the sole point of contact between a vehicle and the road, affecting stability, braking and steering. During hot summer months, high pavement temperatures and heavy loads can cause tyre overheating, increasing the chances of blow‑outs, reduced grip and longer stopping distances. Drivers are urged to check tyre pressure according to load and manufacturer specifications, ensure tread depth meets legal limits, inspect for cuts, cracks or foreign objects, and verify the condition of the spare tyre. They should also respect maximum load ratings, take regular breaks on long trips, and, if a tyre must be changed on a highway, stay clear of the traffic lane and contact the nearest GNR traffic post for assistance.
