Portugal announces diplomatic shifts in Macau and Philippines

Portugal is undergoing diplomatic leadership changes in Asia as part of a strategy to strengthen its presence in the Indo-Pacific region. Alexandre Leitão, the current Consul General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong, has been selected to serve as the ambassador to the Philippines. This appointment is contingent upon the reopening of the Portuguese embassy in Manila, a project currently in progress that may be completed within the next year.

Marta Cowling is expected to succeed Leitão as the next Consul General in Macau and Hong Kong. If confirmed, Cowling will be the first woman to hold this position. She currently serves as the deputy director general of Portugal’s Directorate-General for Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities and has previously held diplomatic posts in Timor-Leste, Ireland, Belgium, and Canada.
