Portugal announces September energy‑storage auction and 2040 capacity targets

Portugal's government will hold an energy‑storage auction on 14 September, offering 750 MW of autonomous battery capacity and an additional 300 MW of surplus capacity for renewable projects. Municipalities will receive a share of the annual revenue—30 % for autonomous projects and 70 % for surplus projects—with an overall 2.5 % contribution to local budgets and a 20 % bonus for agrivoltaic projects.

The National Storage Strategy aims to double total storage capacity to 10.5 GW by 2040, split between 5.26 GW of pumped‑hydro and 4.5 GW of batteries, with an intermediate target of 6.8 GW by 2030. Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho highlighted the importance of storage for supply security, price stability and decarbonisation, and announced the upcoming high‑voltage interconnection with Spain. The auction and strategy were presented by Energy Secretary Jean Barroca and Energy and Geology Director‑General Alexandre Santos.
