Portugal apple harvests begin with focus on quality and agroecology

Apple harvests are underway in different regions of Portugal, with varying outlooks regarding weather and production methods. In Carrazeda de Ansiães, the harvest of early varieties like Gala has begun. While the quality and color of the fruit are reported to be excellent, with production expected to reach between 20,000 and 25,000 tons, upcoming rain and wind pose risks of fruit falling or cracking. Hail remains a significant concern for producers.

In Alcobaça, the harvest has also commenced without serious phytosanitary issues, such as pests or diseases. The Alcobaça Apple campaign is notable for its focus on agroecology, with over 100 qualified ‘EcoPomares’ (Eco-Orchards) utilizing ecological infrastructure and biodiversity management instead of chemical alternatives. More than half of the Alcobaça IGP area is now produced under these agroecological principles, with some production showing zero detectable pesticide residues.
