Portugal approves 12 million euros to support Douro grape growers
The Portuguese government has approved approximately 12 million euros in aid to support grape growers in the Douro region who are unable to sell their agricultural production during the current campaign. The measure aims to assist those who cannot find buyers or cannot deliver grapes for vinification, potentially providing around 50 cents per kilogram of unsold grapes.
Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro described the measure as a specific, one-time solution for this year, noting that it differs from previous years where support was focused on distillation. He also indicated that a structural solution, such as a permanent fund to manage market fluctuations, is being considered for the future.
Rui Paredes, president of Casa do Douro, stated that while the measure is “not ideal,” it is “the possible one” and better than no action at all. The region is facing renewed difficulties with grape distribution, with growers reporting a lack of buyers, limited guaranteed sales for Porto wine production, and low prices.
