Portugal implements renewable energy acceleration zones and faces PSU legislative challenge

In Portugal, political parties Livre, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), and the Left Bloc (BE) have requested a parliamentary review of the Single Social Benefit (PSU). The parties accuse the government of creating a system that fails to combat poverty effectively, citing a low base value of approximately 268 euros and new obligations for beneficiaries, such as mandatory social work. While Livre and BE seek to correct and improve the legislation, the PCP has not ruled out a total revocation of the decree.

Separately, the Portuguese government has approved the Sectoral Program for Renewable Energy Acceleration Areas (PSZAER). This initiative identifies over 800 zones across approximately 170 municipalities, including 34 in the Alentejo region, suitable for solar and wind energy projects. The program aims to accelerate investment by providing shorter licensing periods and simplified environmental procedures for projects located within these designated areas, though it does not constitute automatic authorization for any specific installation.

In the Azores, the Ministry of Internal Administration has condemned an attack on police officers in Rabo de Peixe following a drug trafficking operation. The incident involved citizens throwing stones and wooden beams at police vehicles, resulting in damage to four vehicles. Local political leaders have raised concerns regarding the sufficiency of security resources in the region.
