Portugal approves funds for Greece to acquire three C-390 aircraft
The Portuguese Council of Ministers has approved the necessary expenditures to facilitate the acquisition of three Embraer C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft by Greece. The total program is valued at approximately 590 million euros, excluding VAT, and is expected to span from 2026 to 2031.
Of this amount, up to 532.9 million euros is allocated for the procurement of the three aircraft and an initial support package to bring them into service. An additional 57.1 million euros is designated for electronic warfare equipment, personnel training, technical support, and program management. The procurement will be conducted through the Embraer S.A. and Embraer Portugal S.A. consortium.
Greece intends to use these new-generation aircraft to replace its aging Lockheed C-130 Hercules fleet. The C-390 Millennium, capable of carrying up to 26 tons, will be utilized for tactical and strategic transport, paratrooper deployment, medical evacuation, and humanitarian aid missions. While Greece has submitted an official request, the final government-to-government agreement between the two nations is still pending.
