Portugal approves €480M+ for Metro do Porto and Mondego expansions

The Portuguese Government has approved significant investments in public transport infrastructure, focusing on the Porto and Mondego regions.

A total of approximately €420 million has been allocated to expand the Metro do Porto. This includes €287 million for a new seven-kilometer line with nine stations connecting Estádio do Dragão to Souto in Gondomar, and €184 million for a 10-kilometer extension serving Maia and Trofa through a combination of light rail and metrobus services. These projects are scheduled for execution between 2027 and 2031.

Additionally, the government is reinforcing the Metro Mondego mobility system with an investment of up to €66 million. This funding will support the maintenance of existing infrastructure and the acquisition of five new electric vehicles, increasing the total fleet from 35 to 40.

Financing for these initiatives will be largely provided by the Environmental Fund and the Sustainable 2030 program, which utilizes the European Union's Cohesion Fund. Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro and Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho noted that these investments aim to mitigate CO2 emissions by providing efficient collective transport alternatives.
