Portugal approves military modernization and defense investments

The Portuguese government has authorized significant investments to modernize its military capabilities and strengthen national defense. The Council of Ministers approved a resolution allowing the Army to spend up to 82.35 million euros on the Midlife Upgrade of the Leopard 2A6 tank system. This program includes general repairs, system modernizations, the acquisition of specialized tools and equipment, technical manuals, and training to enhance operational readiness and meet NATO commitments.

Defense Minister Nuno Melo announced further investments aimed at establishing a “credible air defense” and fulfilling the long-standing NATO requirement to establish a Medium Brigade. These enhancements will include new armored vehicles, aerial and terrestrial drones, and aircraft intended for both military missions and firefighting support.

Additionally, the government approved an extra 2.4 million euros for the Navy to ensure the continued supply of operational fuels. The executive also created a special career path for Maritime Rescue Technicians within the Navy to recognize the specific risks and demands of maritime rescue and assistance missions.
