Portugal approves Vision Zero 2030 road safety strategy to halve traffic deaths

The Portuguese government approved the National Road Safety Strategy, called Vision Zero 2030, setting a target to cut road deaths and serious injuries by 50 % by 2030 and to reach zero fatalities and severe injuries by 2050. The plan rests on five pillars – safe users, safe infrastructure, safe vehicles, safe speeds and post‑accident response – and introduces 40 specific measures for schools, rural roads and high‑risk factors such as alcohol, drugs, distraction and fatigue.

The strategy establishes inter‑ministerial governance and continuous monitoring, aligning Portugal with EU road‑safety policy. Recent related actions include reactivating the GNR traffic brigade after two decades, a new road code and increased road‑side enforcement. provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority show 63,493 accidents, 210 deaths, 1,037 serious injuries and 16,907 minor injuries since the start of the year, with a rise of 5,612 accidents, 54 deaths and 27 serious injuries compared with the same period in 2025.

The approved document will now be opened for public consultation.
