Portugal back-to-school spending: Families face rising costs and increased online shopping

Portuguese families are facing increased financial pressure during the back-to-school season. Data from NielsenIQ indicates that household expenses in September can rise by an average of 15%, reaching up to 18% for families with children.

In response to these costs, retailer Lidl has launched a campaign featuring approximately 150 products with prices lower than the previous year. The offering includes stationery, study furniture, and technology, such as desks and mini printers, aimed at providing both savings and convenience.

A study by Webloyalty on online consumption in Portugal reveals that 85% of consumers expect to spend the same or more than in 2025 on school supplies via the internet. Specifically, 81% of respondents anticipate spending up to 200 euros online. Stationery remains the most sought-after category at 63%, followed by clothing and books. To manage budgets, consumers are increasingly relying on promotions, discount codes, and cashback programs to influence their purchasing decisions.
