Portugal book voucher program sees 85.9% utilization rate
The second edition of Portugal’s ‘Cheque-livro’ program concluded on August 31, showing significant growth in engagement. According to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, 52,448 vouchers worth 30 euros each were issued between January and August, with 45,075 being utilized. This represents a utilization rate of 85.9%.
Compared to the first edition, the program saw a 10.1% increase in vouchers issued and a 14.8% increase in those used. The initiative targets young residents born in 2007 and 2008, a group comprising approximately 207,086 potential beneficiaries. While the network of participating bookstores and shops saw a slight decrease, Minister Margarida Balseiro Lopes noted that the rising participation is a positive sign of interest in reading among the youth.
The continuity of the program will be evaluated following a final report from the DGLAB, expected by October 31.
