Portugal Boosts Troop Deployment to Slovakia Amid NATO Security Concerns

Portugal has increased its military presence on NATO’s eastern flank by expanding the Portuguese contingent in Slovakia from roughly 30 to about 156 soldiers. The force, commanded by Chief of Staff Eduardo Mendes Ferrão, will operate within the NATO multinational battlegroup led by Spain. It is equipped with five Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks, fifteen Pandur II 8×8 armored vehicles and four VAMTAC ST5 tactical armored vehicles, and will add a platoon of shooters, an army police module and, from October, explosive‑ordnance‑disposal and advanced observer units.

A flag‑handing ceremony at the Campo Militar de Santa Margarida in Constância formally presented the national standard to the 5th National Force for Slovakia. Portuguese officials say the deployment reflects a “return of conventional warfare to Europe” and a worsening security environment.

The broader NATO effort on the eastern wing, demonstrated during the Strong Lineage 26 exercise in Slovakia, tested rapid mobilisation of additional troops and featured extensive use of drones, heavy equipment and multinational forces from Spain, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovenia and others. Portugal also maintains troops in Romania as part of NATO and participates in a UN mission in the Central African Republic.
