Portugal compensates family of sergeant killed during training

The Portuguese government has approved a compensation payment of 205,000 euros to the family of Sergeant Diogo Duarte. Duarte, 27, died on September 17, 2024, during physical training at the Santa Margarida Military Camp.

A government dispatch signed by the Assistant Secretary of State for National Defense Policy, Nuno Pinheiro Torres, confirmed that the death resulted from an accident during a battalion movement. Following an investigation, it was determined that the fatality occurred due to service performance, qualifying the family for special compensation. As Duarte had not designated any beneficiaries, the payment will be issued to his parents.
