Portugal: Debate over democratic stability and political extremism

During the Estoril Conferences, Socialist Party Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro addressed the rise of political extremism. Carneiro argued that establishing “sanitary cordons” around extremist parties should be a last resort. He emphasized that democracy must first understand the socioeconomic factors that drive citizens toward the fringes, noting that a lack of democratic responses can fuel such movements.

Carneiro warned that extremism progresses through confrontation, which can lead to conflict and eventually war. He advocated for preserving political pluralism and finding common ground even amidst disagreement. The discussions took place as part of the tenth edition of the conferences, themed “Reignite Democracy,” which featured various international academics and ministers.
