Portugal Defense Minister warns of hybrid warfare in Europe

Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo has warned that Europe is currently experiencing a hybrid war, citing a recent wave of bomb threats and emergency aircraft landings as evidence. Melo stated that these actions target the stability of democratic regimes and emphasized that both the European Union and NATO must be prepared to respond to such threats.

During a meeting with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, Melo discussed the modernization of the Portuguese Navy, Army, and Air Force, as well as international missions involving NATO, the UN, and the EU. He also addressed the 2027 State Budget, noting that the government is pursuing significant investments in defense infrastructure and equipment to ensure operational capacity in an unpredictable global environment.

Melo characterized current defense spending as an investment in democracy, noting that the consolidated defense expenditure for next year is projected at 3,798.8 million euros. He further remarked that democratic processes should be conducted within Parliament rather than through street protests.
