Portugal deposits 334 new seed samples in Svalbard Global Seed Vault
Portugal is making its fifth official deposit of national seed samples to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway. This new shipment includes 334 samples, consisting of 303 common bean accessions, 18 cowpea accessions, and 13 corn accessions.
With this addition, the total number of Portuguese genetic accessions preserved in the Arctic facility will rise to 1,861. The initiative aims to safeguard agricultural biodiversity and plant genetic resources against potential loss caused by natural disasters, armed conflicts, or technical failures.
In Portugal, the conservation of this botanical heritage is managed by the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV) and the Portuguese Plant Germplasm Bank (BPGV). The Secretary of State for Agriculture, João Moura, is scheduled to participate in the deposit ceremony.
