Portugal doctors warn heat can worsen cholesterol and urge precautions
Endocrinologist Adriana Pessoa cautions that high summer temperatures can increase cardiovascular risk for people with elevated cholesterol. She explains that heat may raise LDL levels by encouraging consumption of fatty foods and alcoholic drinks, while dehydration can thicken the blood and promote plaque formation. Pessoa recommends staying well‑hydrated, eating fiber‑rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains, choosing healthy fats such as fish, avocado and olive oil, avoiding processed and fried foods, exercising regularly and monitoring medication that might affect temperature regulation.
General practitioner António Hipólito de Aguiar adds that certain medicines can hinder the body’s ability to control temperature or worsen dehydration, so patients should be especially careful with drug use during heat waves. Both experts stress that proactive diet, fluid intake and lifestyle adjustments are essential to protect heart health during Portugal’s summer heat.
