Portugal drives on the right, requiring visitors from left‑hand traffic countries to adapt. Overtaking is done on the left, roundabouts run anti‑clockwise and drivers must give way to traffic already on the roundabout.

General speed limits are 50 km/h in built‑up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads, 100 km/h on roads reserved for motor vehicles, 120 km/h on certain routes and 120 km/h on motorways. Speed cameras are widespread and fines are issued automatically.

Many motorways are toll roads, operating either with traditional booths where tickets are collected and paid on exit, or electronic gantries that record vehicle registrations. Rental cars normally include electronic toll devices.

Drivers must carry a valid licence, passport or ID, vehicle registration, insurance and, if applicable, a rental agreement. Seat belts are compulsory for all occupants; children under 135 cm must use appropriate child restraints. The legal blood‑alcohol limit is 0.05 % for most drivers and 0.02 % for new or professional drivers.

Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal; only hands‑free, Bluetooth or voice‑controlled systems are permitted. Vehicles must also carry a reflective vest, warning triangle, and it is advisable to have a spare bulb, first‑aid kit, torch and spare tyre. Hazard lights must be used when traffic suddenly slows due to obstacles or adverse conditions.
