Portugal economic news: energy tariffs, automotive risks, and ICT growth
Portuguese media reports highlight several economic and social developments. Regarding the energy sector, data from the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE) shows that low voltage network access tariffs are currently approximately 13% lower than in 2014, the year the state completed the privatization of REN, despite the network expanding by over 1,300 kilometers.
Political discussions regarding the state's potential return to REN's capital are noted, with reports suggesting such moves are primarily part of the programs of parties to the left of the PS.
In the industrial sector, the automotive industry faces a crisis due to production declines in Germany and Spain. The Association of Manufacturers for the Automotive Industry (AFIA) estimates that over 1,000 jobs are at risk for national component factories dependent on those markets.
Conversely, the ICT sector has seen significant growth, with Bank of Portugal data indicating that IT service exports have quadrupled over the last decade, now accounting for 9% of service exports.
