Visegrád leaders criticize EU aid to Spain over Ceuta migration

Leaders of the Visegrád Group, including Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, have criticized the European Commission for providing €200 million in aid to Spain following the mass migration influx in Ceuta in July. Magyar argued that it is unfair for Hungary to pay daily fines for defending European borders while other nations receive financial support for failing to manage their own. Babiš further criticized the Spanish government, questioning the effectiveness of their border management.

In a separate parliamentary hearing, Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel addressed the Ceuta situation. While stating that the influx did not pose an immediate threat to the Schengen Area, Rangel criticized Spanish policies that might create a ‘pull factor’ for migrants, specifically referring to extraordinary regularization measures. He noted that Portugal had expressed concerns regarding the impact of such actions on other EU member states.
