Portugal education non‑teaching staff strike reaches 50% participation

The Federation of Independent Public Administration and Public‑Purpose Entities (FESINAP) reports that roughly half of non‑teaching education workers have joined a strike, with the highest concentration in schools in Lisbon, Porto and Aveiro. The union warned that if participation grows, additional sectoral strikes could be organised in social‑solidarity institutions and other educational establishments. The dispute centres on the Labour XXI proposal, which the union says would limit strike rights and alter remuneration for non‑teaching staff.

In the autonomous region of Madeira, the Regional Education Secretariat recorded a 14.1% overall participation rate for the morning‑shift strike, with 20% of non‑teaching staff walking out. Four schools were fully closed and 36 others operated only partially, while no regional education services were disrupted.
