Portugal environmental oversight and regional tourism funding face scrutiny

The Liga para a Protecção da Natureza (LPN) is calling for a stronger and more proactive Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) following the passage of the Volta a Portugal cycling race through the Mata da Albergaria. The LPN expressed concern that the race route was publicized before the ICNF, the landowner, issued a favorable opinion, creating a “fait accompli” that could set a precedent for future activities in protected areas. While noting that the event was conducted under strict environmental conditions and technical supervision, the LPN emphasized the need for increased human and logistical resources to better manage and protect biodiversity.

In a separate development, the Central Alentejo Ecopista Network project is undergoing a funding reappraisal. The Intermunicipal Community of Central Alentejo (CIMAC) is contesting a decision by Turismo de Portugal to limit funding for the €1.5 million project to €400,000. While the project was designed with an expected 90% financing rate, the current proposal would reduce it to approximately 26% because Turismo de Portugal considers there to be only one executing entity. CIMAC is arguing that the partnership between three municipalities should be recognized to secure higher levels of support.
